  • Public Library Curacao, Joyce (guest) wrote 11 years ago:
Nice story about the library, luckily it isn't true. The money for the construction of the library and the money for the acquisition of books were two totally different funds, the new building was funded by the EEG, while acquisition is funded from the island government's budget. Also, the library, already in excistence for 67 years by the time of the constructuion of the NEW building, already had its vast collection of books. What might have contributed to the legend could be the fact that, as a department of the island government, every year when the government's finances were in a bind, the department of Finances of the island government would shut the The architect is Tom Janga. A couple of construction companies went bankrupt during the time they were involved in the construction of the library.

  • Mikve Israel Emanu-El Synagogue, jonathanrodrigues (guest) wrote 15 years ago:
Built in A.D.1732,The Mikve Israel Emanuel Synagogue is the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the Western Hemisphere. It was consecrated on the eve of Passover in A.D.1732 and antedates the first U.S synagogue by 31 years. A fine example of Dutch colonial architecture, the synagogue is reminiscent of the old Portuguese Synagogue(or Esnoga)in Amsterdam and features a pastel yellow facade and gabled roof.Adorned with silver and brass, the synagogue's lofty ceiling is in dramatic contrast to the floor, which is covered with a thick carpet of white sand symbolizing the desert where the Israelites encamped during their journey to the Promised Land.Another highlight is a 17-foot high Holy Ark. Adjacent to the synagogue courtyard is the fascinating Jewish Cultural Historical Museum.Visitors will find many ceremonial objects on display, including a collection of ancient prayer books,a 100-year old seder table setting and silver from the 17th and 18th centuries-many of which are still used by the congregation for holy days and special occasions
  • Rif Fort, jonathanrodrigues (guest) wrote 15 years ago:
Rif Fort was erected in A.D.1828 and is Curacao's youngest fort. It was constructed across from Waterfort, complementing the outer fort while defending the outer section of Otrobanda, the city's other district. During World War 2, a massive steel net was stretched across the bay between the two forts to keep enemy ships from entering into Willemstad and the Isla Refinery
